Acclimating shrimps

There are multiple ways to acclimate in the freshwater aquarium hobby, if you have kept fish before then you are probably familiar with the plop and drop method. If you aren’t familiar with this, its basically temperature acclimating the bag to the aquarium before netting the fish with the water into the bucket if you don’t trust the source and simply plopping the fish into the tank.

I personally only do this if it’s my own shrimps, however, if its a new line I’m trying to introduce, I would drip acclimate. So, what I do, is grab a 3L or 5L jug to pour the new shrimps in.

  1. Once, the shrimps are in the jug, I will grab an airline with a valve on one end to control flow.
  2. Put the other end of the airline inside the tank, suck on the valve end and let water flow into the jug. You can use a sticky tape or pegs to hold the airline in place so it doesn’t drop out of position.
  3. I will then adjust the valve so its a few drops per second
  4. Normally, I leave it dripping for a few hours or until the jugs are full
  5. Then use a shrimp net to net the shrimps out and into the tank

Now, the main reason I do this is to get the shrimps used to the temperature differences, other parameters such as pH, TDS are important as well, but the main thing I aim to match is temperature before netting the shrimpies into the tank.
